Eclecticism absorbed the innovations of modernity, creating new unusual buildings. In this part, we will learn about the connection of the two directions.

In this part, we talk about how Art Nouveau influenced eclecticism.

Modern did not cancel eclecticism. At the beginning of the 20th century they continued to build in this style. Modern was not suitable for all types of buildings – for example, banks were almost never built in it. Some people just don't like the new style.

🧩 Eclecticism uses the discoveries of modernity. In eclectic architecture with traditional layout, columns and quotes, a wavy balcony, an unusual window may appear.

⚖️ Pure modernity, as well as pure eclecticism, is not enough. Basically, there is just such a mixture of styles.

Consider a couple of examples of eclecticism with modern features.

🇱🇻 Eisenstein's houses in Riga. The tenement houses on Alberta Street were built by the architect Mikhail Eisenstein, the father of director Sergei Eisenstein. Among his projects are houses with complex facades and fundamentally different windows. There are also more conservative ones, with quotes, but with unusual elements. All of them are united by the saturation of details on the facade.

🇨🇿 Public house in Prague. It has the features of the classics: symmetry, the correct rhythm of the columns, arched windows. At the same time, new details were added: a large mosaic over the entrance, a metal dome, a complex metal porch.
